Das erste lebt in den blutigen Szenen seines Untergangs im Nibelungenlied fort, das zweite konnte sich ebenfalls nicht behaupten und wurde dem Merowingerreich eingegliedert. Als regnum Burgundiae bildete es neben Austrasien und Neustrien das dritte der frankischen Teilreiche. Der Landesname Burgund blieb an dem mittelalterlichen Konigtum, der Grafschaft und dem Herzogtum, an der Provinz und der heutigen Region Bourgogne haften. Wer waren diese Burgunder? Der Autor verfolgt anhand vieler Quellen ihre Herkunft, Ansiedlung, ihr Verhaltnis zu den rivalisierenden Volkern und den west und ostromischen Kaisern, die Spuren ihrer Kultur und Sprache, ihren Ubergang vom Heidentum zum Arianismus bzw.
