Jede Beobachtung selbstverletzenden Verhaltens wie zum Beispiel das Ritzen der Arme mit einer Rasierklinge wird ohne Zgern mit der Diagnostik Borderline in Verbindung gebracht. Selbstverletzendes Verhalten ist jedoch nur eines von vielen schwerwiegenden Symptomen der BPS. Die Behandlung von BPS galt lange Zeit als uerst schwierig und wenig erfolgsversprechend. Die Suizidrate der Patienten galt als hoch und Therapien wurden von den Patienten schnell und hufig abgebrochen. Die in den 1980er Jahren von Marsha Linehan entwickelte DialektischBehavioraleTherapie (DBT), welche bewhrte Methoden der Verhaltenstherapie mit Anstzen der Achtsamkeit und Akzeptanz verbindet, hat jedoch entscheidende Vernderungen und Erkenntnisse bezglich der Behandlung von BPSPatienten hervorgebracht. Im Gegensatz zu allen anderen strungsspezifischen Behandlungskonzepten konnte die Wirksamkeit der DBT empirisch nachgewiesen werden (Bohus, 2009). Besonders hervorzuheben ist das Konzept des psychosozialen Fertigkeitentrainings, welches fester Bestandteil der DBT ist. In diesem Behandlungsmodul werden gezielt Fertigkeiten trainiert, welche den Patienten ermglichen sollen, akute Krisen zu bewltigen und funktionale Verhaltensweisen zu erlernen, mit deren Hilfe sie ihren Alltag meistern knnen.
