Erst nach dem zweiten Weltkrieg entwickelte sich der Luftverkehr in Europa zum Massenverkehr. Seither ist der Luftverkehr, abgesehen von wenigen Ausnahmen, wie zum Beispiel durch die Auswirkungen der Terroranschlge des 11.September 2001, von hohen Wachstumsraten geprgt. Ein Hauptgrund hierfr ist die Liberalisierung des Luftverkehrs in Europa Mitte der 1980er Jahre. Diese fhrte nicht nur fr die Fluggste, sondern auch im Frachtverkehr zu einer Verbesserung des Angebots. Mehr Anbieter haben Marktzugang, folglich wurde das Streckenangebot verbessert und die Frequenzen der Flge erhht (Pompl 2007:1). Die ffnung des Binnenmarktes der Europischen Union (EU) brachte eine Vernderung der Routenplanung der Fluggesellschaften mit sich. Das HubandSpoke System gewann an Bedeutung. Der grundlegende Vorteil dieses Streckennetzsystems liegt in der Angebotserweiterung. Bei gleichbleibender Anzahl von Flgen kann eine grere Zahl von Flugmrkten bedient werden. Dies wird durch die Bndelung der Passagierstrme an einem sogenannten LuftverkehrsHub, auch Drehkreuz genannt, erreicht (Pompl 2007:168170). Die Entwicklung der LuftverkehrsHubs in Europa wird in folgender Hausarbeit nher betrachtet. Dabei werden zunchst die Hintergrnde der Entwicklung dargestellt, wobei die Liberalisierung des Luftverkehrs in Europa hierbei die bedeutende Rolle spielt.
