Auf keiner Ebene ist die Sprache so starken Vernderungen unterworfen wie im Bereich des Wortschatzes. In jeder Sprache kann man zu jeder Zeit ein Kommen und Gehen' von Wrtern beobachten' (Braun 1998: 158, 179). Zahlreiche Ursachen liegen vor, die zur Zunahme von Wrtern, also zum Ausbau des Wortschatzes, fhren: neue Dinge mssen benannt werden, Gegenstnde werden detaillierter differenziert, Fachwissen wird der Allgemeinheit vermittelt (z. B. im Bereich der Medizin und der Wirtschaft), politische Internationalisierung (Lehnwortschtze) (vgl. Braun 1998: 179f.). Die Erweiterung des Wortschatzes vollzieht sich hauptschlich mit Hilfe von Wortbildung und Wortbildungsmitteln. Eine Mglichkeit der Wortbildung ist die Komposition (vgl. Braun 1998: 166f.). Grnde fr die Zunahme von Komposita sind der Benennungsbedarf in verschiedenen Lebensbereichen sowie das Streben nach sprachlicher Differenzierung in vielen Sach und Fachbereichen' (Braun 1998: 170). Des Weiteren spielen dabei die Tendenz zur Sprachkonomie eine Rolle ebenso stilistische Grnde, da viele Komposita eine Aussage prgnanter zur Geltung bringen knnen als umstndliche Wortgruppen (der Hund der Polizei: der Polizeihund) (vgl. Braun 1998: 170). Besonders hufig werden Komposita in Zeitschriften und Zeitungen verwendet, da durch diese lngere Phrasen ersetzt bzw. Informationen komprimiert werden knnen. Inhalte von Artikeln werden in wenigen Wrtern als berschrift zusammenfasst (vgl. Mailnder 2000: 12).
