Nachdem er zunchst Medizin, Klassische Philologie und Philosophie in Dorpat und Petersburg studiert, kommt er 1905 als Schler der Neukantianer Cohen und Natorp nach Marburg. Hartmann wird 1909 habilitiert und tritt die Nachfolge Natorps als ordentlicher Professor an. Das erste systematische Hauptwerk, die Grundzge einer Metaphysik der Erkenntnis, erscheint 1921. Es bricht mit dem logischen Idealismus der Neukantianer und fhrt auf eine ontologische Grundlehre hin. Hartmann sieht die Aufgabe der Philosophie nicht in der berwindung, sondern in der kritischen Reformulierung der klassischen ontologischen Fragestellungen. Das "Kernstck" seiner Ontologie bildet nach Hartmanns eigener Aussage die in Mglichkeit und Wirklichkeit (1938) formulierte "Modaltheorie." Nachdem Hartmann zunchst sechs Jahre in Kln lehrt, folgt er 1931 einem Ruf nach Berlin. Ab 1945 lehrt er in Gttingen. Ohne eine eigene Schule gegrndet zu haben, zeigt sein Werk vielfltige Einflsse auf unterschiedlichste Denker wie Plessner, Gehlen, Geyser oder Litt. Nicolai Hartmann stirbt 1950 in Gttingen.
