"Die indischstmmigen Roma sind eine in vielerlei Hinsicht besondere und in Europa als numerisch millionenstarke Minderheit vertretene Grogruppe. Roma aus der Groregion Ost und Sdosteuropa sind zuletzt in den neunziger Jahren als ""Elendsflchtlinge"" ins Bewusstsein der mittel und westeuropischen Gesellschaften gerckt. Welche Merkmale aber bestimmen die Lebensrealitt von Roma in ihren postsozialistischen Heimatstaaten? Wie haben sich die tief greifenden Umbrche nach 1989 ausgewirkt? Knnen neue Rechte und Freiheiten durch Roma zur Selbstorganisation und zur Vernderung des status quo genutzt werden? Diesen Fragen geht die Arbeit am Beispiel Rumniens nach, wobei die unterprivilegierten Segmente der dortigen RomaBevlkerung im Mittelpunkt der Betrachtung stehen. Auf der Grundlage theoretischer Vorberlegungen zum Ethnizittskonzept, zum Randgruppenbegriff und zur Bedeutung und Funktion von Stereotyp und Vorurteil werden zunchst spezifische historische Erfahrungen von Roma in Rumnien bis zum Ende des Sozialismus beleuchtet. Nach der anschlieenden Untersuchung rechtlichinstitutioneller Grundlagen des Minderheitenschutzes nach 1989 ist der Hauptteil der Studie der Analyse der Dimensionen, Hintergrnde und Folgen von Verarmung und verstrkter gesellschaftlicher Isolation sowie der Errterung von Formen der ethnospezifischen Selbstorganisation gewidmet. Eine Zusammenfassung der Ergebnisse mit Blick auf Handlungsmglichkeiten und Entwicklungsperspektiven rundet die Arbeit ab. Die Arbeit hinterfragt tradierte Klischees von ""den Zigeunern"" und soll ber eine Grogruppe informieren, die ein kaum bekannter Bestandteil der europischen Kulturlandschaften ist. Gleichzeitig veranschaulicht die Studie die Komplexitt einer europischen Marginalittsproblematik."
