Welche Bedeutung kommt Regional und Minderheitensprachen im ffentlichen Leben zu? Und vor allem: welche Bedeutung sollte ihnen zukommen? Diese Fragestellungen gehren zu denjenigen Themen, die aus der gegenwrtigen sprachwissenschaftlichen und politischen Diskussion nicht wegzudenken sind. Besonders gilt dies vor dem Hintergrund aktueller sprachpolitischer Engagements seitens des Europarats wie beispielsweise der Auflage einer Charta zur Untersttzung wenig verbreiteter Idiome und ihrer Sprecher der Europischen Charta der Regional und Minderheitensprachen. Dieses Dokument und seine Auswirkungen stehen im Mittelpunkt der vorliegenden Studie. Ausgehend von einem theoretischen Modell zur Frderung von Regional und Minderheitensprachen wird die Charta zunchst bezglich ihres Aufbaus und ihrer Intention betrachtet und in die europische Sprachpolitik eingeordnet. Anschlieend erfolgt eine Verengung der Perspektive: Die Konsequenzen des Sprachvertrags werden an den Fallbeispielen Frankreichs und der Schweiz illustriert an zwei frankophonen Staaten also, deren Konzepte von Sprache und Identitt unterschiedlicher kaum sein knnten. Ein Schwerpunkt der Betrachtung liegt dabei auf dem Bereich des Schulwesens, der die organisatorischen wie ideologischen Mglichkeiten und Grenzen der Charta gut zu verdeutlichen vermag. So werden abschlieend nicht nur deren konkrete Auswirkungen in Frankreich und der Schweiz kontrastiv aufgezeigt. Vielmehr ermglicht diese Untersuchung Rckschlsse zu Status und Bedeutung von Minderheitensprachen in beiden Staaten ? und damit auch wichtige Erkenntnisse ber den Stellenwert des Franzsischen zu Beginn des 21. Jahrhunderts.
