Diese Europische Gemeinschaft fr Kohle und Stahl (EGKS) trat 1952 in Kraft und hatte die Schaffung eines Gemeinsamen Marktes fr Kohle und Stahl zum Ziel. Dieselben 6 Staaten unterzeichneten 1957 die Rmischen Vertrge, die 1958 zur Grndung der Europischen Atomgemeinschaft (Euratom) und der Europischen Wirtschaftsgemeinschaft (EWG) fhrten. Der EWGVertrag definierte als Hauptziel, durch die Errichtung eines Gemeinsamen Marktes und die schrittweise Annherung der Wirtschaftspolitik eine harmonische Entwicklung zwischen den Mitgliedstaaten zu frdern. 1967 wurde die EWG zusammen mit der EGKS und der Euratom integrierter Bestandteil der Europischen Gemeinschaft (EG). Nach Bildung einer Zollunion im Jahre 1968 und der Koordinierung der Auenpolitik im Rahmen der Europischen Politischen Zusammenarbeit (EPZ) wurde 1992 der Maastrichter Vertrag ber die EU unterzeichnet. Zuknftige Zielsetzungen der EU sind u.a. die stufenweise Errichtung einer Wirtschafts und Whrungsunion, die Grndung einer Europischen Zentralbank sowie die Verwirklichung einer politischen Union. Im gleichen Jahr vereinbarten die EG und die EFTA die Bildung eines Europischen Wirtschaftsraumes (EWR). Dieser kurze chronologische Abri der Geschichte der Europischen Gemeinschaften zeigt, da die Staaten in Europa zunehmend politisch wie auch wirtschaftlich miteinander verflochten sind. Diese enge Verbundenheit hat aber auch die Notwendigkeit einer supranationalen Koordination und Kooperation zur Folge.
