Die Entstehungsgeschichte der bier vorgelegten Studie reicht bis in das Jahr 1984 zu riick. Das Freizeitund Sportamt der Stadt Hanau trat im Friihjahr 1984 mit der Bitte an mich heran, gemeinsam mit zwei Sozialarbeitern eine Dokumentation zur Geschichte der Hanauer Ferienkolonien zu erstellen. Erste praktische Erfahrung auf dem Gebiet der Hanauer "Stadtranderholung" konnte ich seit 1978 als Betreuer und Koordinator in der "Ferienkolonie Wilhelmsbad" sowie den entsprechenden Ferienaktionen in den Hanauer Stadtteilen KleinAuheim, GroBauheim und Steinheim sammeln. Der Ursprung und die Historie der MaBnahme sollten nun unter Heranziehung von Magistratsakten und den Bestanden des Hanauer Stadtarchivs mit dem Ziel erkundet werden, eine Dokumentation zur Geschichte der Hanauer Ferienkolonien vorzulegen. Ausgehend von der Annahme, es handele sich urn eine Form der Kindererholungsfiir sorge, die in den Jahren nach 1945 entstanden sei, konzentrierten sich die Arbeiten an fiinglich auf die Sichtung der Bestande des Hanauer Archivs nach 1945 sowie die Aus wertung ortlicher Tageszeitungen aus den ersten Nachkriegsjahren. Die Vermutung, der Griindungszeitraum der Ferienkolonien liege in dieser Periode, erwies sich aber sehr bald als falsch. Vollig unerwartet fand sich eine Veroffentlichung aus dem Jahr 19091, die auf einen Entstehungszeitraum in den 80er Jahren des vorigen Jahrhunderts deutete.
