Die Stadt Gadara, heute Umm Qais, liegt im Nordwesten von Jordanien sdstlich vom See Genezareth. Die dort ausgegrabene frhchristliche, fnfschiffige Basilika, ihre Dokumentation und Deutung, ist Gegenstand des vorliegenden Buches. Im Evangelium wird Gadara bei Matthus 8, 28 bis 34, erwhnt als Stadt, in der das Wunder der Dmonenaustreibung stattfand. Die These, nach der es sich bei der Basilika um diesen biblischen Ort handelt, wird vom Autor errtert. Die topographische Lage der Basilika ber einem bedeutenden paganen Mausoleum und seine Verbindung mit einer groen frhchristlichen Krypta lassen darauf schlieen, da es sich bei der Stelle, an der sich einst die Basilika erhob, nach Ansicht der Bewohner Gadaras um einen heiligen Ort (locus sanctus) handelte. Darauf verweisen die berreste zahlreicher, wichtiger Persnlichkeiten, die auf dem Areal der Basilika bestattet wurden. Seit der Sptantike bildete die Stadt ein christliches Pilgerziel, wofr die fr den Raum der Dekapolis einzigartige fnfschiffige Basilika spricht. Darberhinaus behandelt die vorliegende Arbeit den Typus der fnfschiffigen Basiliken im Mittelmeerraum und liefert damit erstmals einen kompletten berblick ber diesen Bautypus. Auch Bauornamentik, Bauglieder, Mosaiken und liturgisches Mobiliar der frhbyzantinischen Zeit kommen zur Darstellung.
