Die Mode bestimmt zumeist ein Bild des Ideals von Schnheit in der jeweiligen Gesellschaft. Jede Epoche entwickelt eigene Mastbe von einem sthetischen Ideal des menschlichen Krpers. Kleidung betont oder unterdrckt bestimmte Partien des Krpers, um die Silhouette dem gltigen Ideal anzunhern: Sie korrigiert und stilisiert. Mode gibt die Mglichkeit nach auen jemand anderes zu sein als seine Herkunft es vorgibt. Kleidungsstil und Mode haben die Eigenschaft einen raschen Wechsel zu vollziehen. Das heit es besteht stndige Vernderung in Kleidungs und Lebensstilen. Kleidung hat ebenfalls die Eigenschaft, den sozialen Stand einer Person zu signalisieren. Sie reflektiert soziale Hierarchien. Vor allem das Mittelalter kannte [..] Kleiderordnungen, die sich in komplizierten Regelungen ber Farbe und Qualitt der Stoffe verstelten. Im Mittelalter ist die Menge des Stoffes, seine Art (Seide, Baumwolle u.a.), die Lnge der Schleppe eine Richtlinie fr die gesellschaftliche Einordnung. Somit gibt die Kleidung verlssliche Auskunft ber die Herkunft einer Person. Schon der Titel der Novelle, als Sprichwort, beinhaltet dieses Thema, welches sich mit gesellschaftlichen Stnden und deren Kleiderordnung beschftigt.
