Neben den Erzahlungszyklen vom Leichendamon (Vetalapancavimsatika) und dem von Arji Borji (Simhasanadvatrimsika) sind die zweimal zweiunddreissig ineinander verschrankten Geschichten von Kasna Chan das bedeutendste mongolische Erzahlungswerk, das auf indischen Vorlagen beruht. Wie bei den beiden anderen Werken handelt es sich um keine blosse Ubersetzung, sondern um eine vielfaltig veranderte, adaptierte und ausgeschmuckte weitgehend eigenstandige Version, die fur die Folklore und Literaturgeschichte von grosser Bedeutung ist. Es kommt hinzu, dass die aus dem Besitz des finnischen Volkskundlers M.A. Castren stammende mongolische Handschrift, nach der der altenburgische Sprachwissenschaftler und Staatsmann H.C. v. d. Gabelentz (18071874) ubersetzte, seit 1945 verschollen und damit die anscheinend einzige Fassung dieser Version ist; andere, jedoch nicht identische Fassungen, befinden sich in der Staatsbibliothek Ulaanbaatar. Gabelentz' nunmehr weit uber hundert Jahre alte Ubersetzung ist flussig und legt ein gutes Zeugnis fur die Sprachbeherrschung dieses Pioniers der Mongolistik ab.
