Ein kunstgeschichtliches Handbuch verfasste, bezeichnete die Kapelle des Kardinals von Portugal in San Miniato al Monte als eines der schnsten Gesamtkunstwerke der Frhrenaissance . In der Tat ist die Kapelle in ihrer gesamten Erscheinung eine Komposition aller Knste, die im Italien der Renaissance ihres gleichen sucht. Dabei wird die Frage aufgeworfen, was unter dem Terminus eines Gesamtkunstwerkes eigentlich verstanden wird. DuMonts Lexikon der bildenden Kunst definiert ein Gesamtkunstwerk als: Die Idee der vollstndigen Interpretation verschiedener Kunstformen Malerei, Sprache, dramatische Handlung, Poesie, Musik in einer Weise, da keine dieser Formen dominiert. Diese Vorstellung wurde ursprnglich mit Richard Wagner und seinen Musikdramen assoziiert. Diese Definition eines Gesamtkunstwerkes beruht auf dem Konzept einer umfassenden Planung und berwachung smtlicher einzelner Komponenten. Im Falle der Grabkapelle betrifft dies die Architektur, den Skulpturenschmuck und die bildliche Ausgestaltung der Rumlichkeit sowie auch sakrale Gegenstnde, die fr die Liturgie notwendig sind.
