Diese Arbeit setzt sich mit den von Bello vertretenen Positionen innerhalb der Sprachdebatte auseinander. Diese Diskussion, die bis weit in das zwanzigste Jahrhundert nachzuverfolgen ist, dreht sich um den Status und die Norm der spanischen Sprache in den unabhngig gewordenen Nationalstaaten Lateinamerikas. Forderungen nach kultureller Emanzipation durch den radikalen Bruch mit dem Spanischen und einer Neuorientierung am Franzsischen stehen Stimmen gegenber, die die knftige Spracheinheit der spanischsprachigen Lnder als weiterhin wichtig und erstrebenswert ansehen. Fr die romanistische Linguistik ist die Gramtica de la lengua castellana destinada al uso de los americanos Bellos bedeutendstes Werk. Ihr Ruf als eine der besten Grammatiken der spanischen Sprache ist bis heute ungebrochen.
