Ein wunderschner Traum doch htten wir zu dessen Realisierung 2000 Jahre frher leben mssen, und so erscheint es als ein Segen, da uns durch Plinius d. J., einem rmischen Staatsbeamten zu Zeiten Kaiser Trajans, ein beeindruckend klares und przises Zeugnis antiker Gartenkunst hinterlassen ward in Form von 247 essayartigen, zum Teil aber auch ganz persnlichen Briefen. Machen wir uns doch einmal auf zu einem Phantasiespaziergang und lassen uns fhren von Plinius d. J.. Ziehe ich mich in dieses Gartenhuschen zurck, so ist mir, als ob ich gar nicht auf meinem Landsitz weilte, und ich habe an ihm meine besondere Freude an den Sauturnalien, wenn der brige Teil des Hauses von dem ausgelassenen Lrm der Festtage widerhallt; denn so stre ich nicht die Unterhaltung meiner Leute noch sie mich bei meiner Arbeit. Das einzige, was dem Landhaus bei all seinen Vorteilen und Annehmlichkeiten abgeht, ist ein Springbrunnen; aber Brunnen oder vielmehr Quellen sind vorhanden, sie befinden sich knapp unter der Erdoberflche.'
