Die Hagia Sophia wurde unter Kaiser Justinian I. 53237 in Konstantinopel als die Hauptkirche des Ostrmischen Reiches erbaut, von Sultan Mehmed II. Ftih 1453 zur Hauptmoschee des Osmanischen Reiches gemacht und von Staatsprsident Kemal Atatrk 1934 in ein Museum umgewandelt. In den Jahren 184749 hat der Schweizer Architekt Gaspare Fossati im Auftrage Sultan Abdlmecids I. das baufllig und schbig gewordene 'Weltwunder der Architektur' restauriert. Das 150jhrige Jubilum dieser Restaurierung, einer frhen Glanzleistung der Denkmalpflege, ist der Anlass zu einer Ausstellung, die am Institut fr Kunstgeschichte der Universitt Bern erarbeitet wurde und im Jahre 1999 im Bernischen Historischen Museum, im WinckelmannMuseum Stendal und in der Casa del Mantegna in Mantua prsentiert wird. Sie gliedert sich in zwei Abteilungen. Es werden ausgewhlte Zeichnungen und Aquarelle aus Fossatis Nachlass gezeigt, die nicht nur bewundernswerte Bilder der Hagia Sophia sind, sondern auch Fossatis Arbeit am Baudenkmal sowie seine Konservierungsmethoden anschaulich nachvollziehen lassen. Daneben stehen 'Bilder der Hagia Sophia aus sechs Jahrhunderten' Veduten, analytische Zeichnungen, exakte Bauaufnahmen, Modelle, Photographien welche die knstlerische Aneignung des Bauwerks ber einen grossen Zeitraum hinweg sichtbar und zugleich die Geschichte seiner wissenschaftlichen Erforschung, die mit Fossati beginnt, transparent machen sollen.
