Das ist jedoch nur die offizielle Version, die dadurch statistisch bekrftigt wird, dass einfach so gut wie keine offiziellen Untersuchungen zum Thema Kaste stattfinden. Falls welche durchgefhrt werden, dann sind sie vom lokalen Charakter und hauptschlich durch auslndische Forscher. Diese Tatsache erleichtert nicht die Aufgabe indische soziale Verteilung nach dem Faktor Kaste zu erfassen. Die Darstellungen, die dazu gemacht werden, knnen nur fragmentarisch und exemplarisch sein. Einerseits kann die Institution Kaste nicht innerhalb eines Jahrhunderts verschwunden sein, wenn sie seit drei Jahrtausenden bestanden hat, andererseits ist das Thema Kastensystem"1 innerhalb breitester, nicht nur der fhrenden Kreise nahezu vollkommen tabuisiert" (BRONGER 2000, S. 104). Daraus resultiert, dass innerhalb der indischen Gesellschaft ein wichtiger sozialer Faktor vorhanden ist, der auch durchaus bercksichtigt wird, allerdings in seinem gegenwrtigen Zustand kaum erforscht ist. Die letzte ganz Indien umfassende Untersuchung fand um das Jahr 1980 statt und trgt den Namen Mandal Report (s. Tabelle A1). Sie beschreibt die damalige Situation der Kaste in ganz Indien und stellt fest, dass es die Kasten durchaus noch gibt. Aber seither gibt es sie nicht mehr, denn was nicht erwhnt wird ist auch nicht existent.
