Wie kaum eine andere Figur des Mittelalters beschftigt der Stauferkaiser Friedrich I. Barbarossa die Geschichtsforschung in Deutschland bis heute. Die intensive Beschftigung mit seiner Reichspolitik und die Ereignisse, die in der zweiten Hlfte des 12. Jahrhunderts in Bezug auf den italienischen Reichsteil stattfanden, bilden den thematischen Schwerpunkt der folgenden Untersuchung. Der Fokus liegt dabei in der Aufdeckung der Hintergrnde, die zu Zwistigkeiten zwischen dem Kaiserreich und dem apostolischen Stuhl fhrten. Damit verbunden wird auch die Konfrontation zwischen dem deutschen Regenten und der Kurie, insbesondere mit Papst Hadrian IV., seinem Nachfolger Alexander III. und ihren engsten Verbndeten, dem Lombardischen Bund, unter die Lupe genommen. Darber hinaus sollen die unterschiedlichen Beziehungsgeflechte zwischen den beteiligten Parteien beleuchtet werden, um das Verstndnis aufzubringen aus welchem Antrieb heraus Bndnisse eingegangen und Feindschaften ausgesprochen wurden.
