Es ist der dritte groe Roman Frischs nach Stiller (1954) und Homo faber (1957) und bildet mit letzteren in dem Sinne eine Trilogie, als dass in diesen Prosawerken Frischs der Identittsproblematik des Menschen eine dominierende Stellung zukommt, im Stiller und Gantenbein modellhaft thematisiert anhand der Ehe als zwischenmenschliche Beziehung, im Homo faber anhand eines auf eine technisierte und kontrollierte Umwelt Vertrauenden, dem dennoch ein unglaubliches Schicksal widerfhrt, nmlich die Liebesbeziehung zu dessen eigener Tochter. Eng verbunden mit dieser Problematik der Selbstwerdung ist auch die oftmalige Widersprchlichkeit von faktischer und erlebter Wirklichkeit der Figuren, also das Missverhltnis zwischen innerer und uerer Realitt. Whrend im Stiller und Homo faber noch ein Romangeschehen im herkmmlichen Sinne zu verfolgen sind und der Leser typisch fr einen Illusionsroman eingeladen wird, sich mit einer der Figuren zu identifizieren um so Mitwisser oder gar Mitspieler zu werden, ist davon im Gantenbein nichts mehr vorhanden. Die Ausgangsposition des Romans: ein Mann sitzt von der Ehefrau verlassen in der leeren Wohnung und fragt sich, was geschehen ist. Nun wird nicht das Geschehene faktisch rekonstruiert, sondern anhand von berlegungen des IchErzhlers an fiktiven Figuren gespiegelt.
