Was passiert, wenn die Polkappen schmelzen? Kommt gar der Golfstrom ins Stocken und die Menschheit steht am Rande einer neuen Eiszeit? Fragen, die nur mit Hilfe der Paloklimaforschung beantwortet werden knnen. Eine genaue Kenntnis der klimatischen Entwicklung auf der Erde ist Voraussetzung um aktuelle und zuknftige Klimanderungen richtig beurteilen zu knnen. Dabei lautet das Motto: aus der Vergangenheit fr die Zukunft lernen. Die heutige weltweite Durchschnittstemperatur liegt bei etwa 15C. Diese unterliegt jedoch Schwankungen, die von 11C Durchschnittstemperatur in den Glazialen (Kalt bzw. Eiszeiten) bis zu 24C in den groen Warmzeiten (z.B. lteres Tertir) reichen knnen (JUNGE & EISSMANN 2003: 346). Es muss geklrt werden, welches die determinierenden Faktoren sind, die diese Vernderungen verursachen. Eine detaillierte Kenntnis der Funktionsweise des Klimasystems ist elementar um Ursachen und Folgen von Klimavernderungen verstehen zu knnen. Welche Vorgnge im System Erde, verndern auf welche Art und Weise die globale und regionale Verteilung von Temperatur und Niederschlgen. In welchem Mae haben etwa plattentektonische Prozesse Einfluss auf das Klimasystem? Was sind natrliche Steuermechanismen fr den Anteil von Treibhausgasen wie Kohlendioxid oder Methan in der Atmosphre? Wodurch werden Eiszeiten hervorgerufen?
