Hierbei kommt den Wirtschaftsprfern eine zentrale Bedeutung zu. Sie sollen dazu beitragen, dass die Informationsasymmetrien zwischen dem Management und den verschiedenen Stakeholdern durch die Verffentlichung von Bilanzen abgebaut werden und die tatschliche Performance der Unternehmen nicht verschleiert wird. Die zahlreichen Bilanzskandale der letzten Jahre (Enron, Worldcom, Parmalat etc.) haben das Vertrauen in die finanzielle Berichterstattung erschttert. Etablierte Unternehmen mussten trotz erhaltener uneingeschrnkter Besttigungsvermerke der Abschlussprfer Insolvenz anmelden, so dass diese bei ihrer originren Aufgabe, die Einhaltung der gesetzlichen Regelungen bei der Erstellung der zu verffentlichenden Abschlussberichte zu gewhrleisten, scheinbar versagt haben. Dies wirft ein schlechtes Licht auf die Branche der Wirtschaftsprfer und deutet auf eine zu geringe Qualitt der Abschlussprfung hin. Weltweit wurden verschiedene Gesetze verabschiedet, um diese Qualitt zu erhhen und so das verlorengegangene Vertrauen in die Unternehmenspublizitt zurckzugewinnen. Im Rahmen dieser Untersuchung wird die Bilanzpolitik (Earnings Management) als Mglichkeit vorgestellt, Anreize der Manager zu verfolgen. Weiterhin wird das Ausma der Bilanzpolitik als Indikator fr Prfungsqualitt veranschaulicht. Da Bilanzpolitik an sich unbeobachtbar ist, wird nachfolgend auf die diskretionren Periodenabgrenzungen als in der Forschung am hufigsten verwendeter Proxy eingegangen und das JonesModell von 1991 sowie eine Modifizierung dieses Modells als Mglichkeiten zu deren Berechnung vorgestellt.
