Die Bukowina als europaische Kulturlandschaft, ihr Entstehen an der Peripherie des Habsburgerreiches seit dem ausgehenden 18. Jahrhundert bis zum Ende des Ersten Weltkrieges ist zentraler Gegenstand dieser Arbeit. Der Brennpunkt liegt dabei im Erkennen, Aufzeigen und Erklaren raumwirksamer Gestaltungsprozesse sowie ihrer Veranderung in der Zeit; ausgehend von einer sich stet wandelnden geopolitischen Situation und der spatestens Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts beginnenden Selbstpositionierung der Region zwischen Nationalstaatsdenken und eingeforderter Reichsideologie des Gemeinsamen, dem Aufbau von regionalen Identitaten, eigenstandigem Landesbewusstsein und nationalen Forderungen. Ein moglichst unvoreingenommenes, offenes Verstandnis um Vergangenheit und Gegenwart der Bukowina als kulturlandschaftliche Einheit geteilt zwischen der heutigen Ukraine und Rumanien hangt wesentlich von kritischer Distanz ab, jedoch auch vom intimen Verstandnis der mannigfachen Schichten dieser im europaischen Bewusstsein nach wie vor so schillernden Landschaft Bukowina, deren Grundlagen in knapp eineinhalb Jahrhunderten geschaffen wurden.
