Bei dem hier vorgelegten Band 27 der Schriftenreihe des Bundesinstituts fur Bevol kerungsforschung, handelt es sich urn die Dissertation von Herrn Robert Herter Eschweiler. In seiner Arbeit bescMftigt er sich mit der langfristigen Geburtenent wicklung in Deutschland und versucht, verschiedene Erklarungsansatze theoretisch zu integrieren. Nach einer kurzen Beschreibung des empirischen Verlaufs der Geburtenentwick lung in Deutschland uber die letzten 150 Jahre, pruft er zunachst einige Verhaltens modelle auf ihre Eignung fur die beabsichtigte Integration. HerterEschweiler entscheidet sich fur ein mikrosoziologisches Verhaltensmodell unter der Annahme prinzipiell rationalen Verhaltens der Individuen. Dieser Festlegung folgend erstellt er ein sehr allgemeines, vorlaufig nur form ales Modell zur Erklarung des generativen Verhaltens. Dieses "Grundmodell" legt er dann der anschlieBenden Diskussion fruherer Erklarungsansatze zu Grunde. Damit gelingt es ihm, die jeweiligen speziellen Beitrage der jeweiligen Erklarungsansatze des generativen Verhaltens unter einheit lichen Gesichtspunkten zu analysieren und herauszustellen, welche Komponenten des "Grundmodells" auf welche Weise spezifiziert werden und welche unberuck sichtigt bleiben. AbschlieBend resumiert HerterEschweiler, welche Komponenten des "Grundmodells" als bedeutsam fur eine Erklarung generativer Prozesse ange sehen werden mussen. Mit seiner Dissertation legt HerterEschweiler in einem bereits viel bearbeiteten Gebiet eine Bestandsaufnahme von Ansatzen aus verschiedenen Teildisziplinen zur Erklarung der Geburtenentwicklung vor, mit der es besser als bislang moglich ist, die Beitrage der unterschiedlichen Ansatze aufeinander zu beziehen, so dass sich ihre Erklarungsleistungen nun kumulieren. Auch wird deutlich, wie sich die Schwerpunkte des Interesses hinsichtlich der Erklarung generativer Verhaltensweisen zwischen Autoren, Teildisziplinen und uber die Zeit verandert haben.
