Die Routine ihrer Arbeit, die Leblosigkeit ihres Arbeitsplatzes, die realen und gesellschaftlich errichteten Mauern das alles hat Einfluss auf die Charaktere und spiegelt sich in ihren Eigenheiten wider. Die Protagonisten sind sowohl ntzlicher Teil als auch realistisches Abbild und schutzlose Opfer ihrer Welt; einer modernen und sich verndernden Welt, in der man sich entweder anpasst oder untergeht. Sie leben in einer Zeit der historischen, politischen und konomischen Umwlzung, in der ihr ehemals festes Weltbild wackelt und sich die Moralvorstellungen langsam aber stetig wandeln. Der Protagonist Bartleby, der durch seine Arbeitsverweigerung zum Schutzheiligen aller NonKonformisten geworden ist, kann daher als AntiHeld und Aushngeschild des unbeugsamen Amerikaners gelten; allerdings auch vllig entmenschlicht als Geist, Roboter oder reine Projektionsflche gesehen werden.
