Es ist dem deutschen Arktisforscher und Geophysiker Carl Weyprecht zu verdanken, dass in den Jahren 18821883 mehrere Stationen zur systematischen Erforschung der Polargebiete errichtet wurden. Die ungarischoesterreichische Forschungsstation wurde auf der nordoestlich von Island gelegenen Insel Jan Mayen eingerichtet, wo dreizehn Monate lang meteorologische, magnetische und astronomische Beobachtungen angestellt wurden.
