Im Turnus von vier Jahren treffen sich die besten Sportler aus fnf Kontinenten, um ihre Krfte zu messen. Rund um den Globus fiebern Milliarden von Menschen vor ihren Fernsehbildschirmen gebannt mit. Seit ihrer Premiere 1896 in Athen ben die Olympischen Spiele der Moderne eine gewaltige Faszination auf die Staaten dieser Welt aus. Von wenigen Ausnahmen abgesehen hat jeder neue Staat das Bestreben entwickelt, Mitglied der Olympischen Familie zu werden; mitunter sogar noch bevor die Anerkennung beim Vlkerbund (beziehungsweise spter den Vereinten Nationen) ersucht wurde. Zu Beginn des 21. Jahrhunderts schlielich kann das Internationale Olympische Komitee (IOC) mehr Nationale Olympische Komitees (NOK) verzeichnen, als Staaten zu den Vereinten Nationen gehren. Hinter den Spielen steht eine Ideologie, die vielfltige Ziele verfolgt und in deren Mittelpunkt der Einsatz fr den Frieden steht. Mit dem Ziel der Friedensfrderung durch Verstndigung sowie Erziehung zu Regeln und gegenseitiger Achtung weist der Olympismus Parallelen zum Idealismus als Theorie in den Internationalen Beziehungen auf, gleichwohl ist die Bedeutung von weltweiten Sportgroereignissen in der internationalen Politik weitestgehend unerforscht. In der vorliegenden Arbeit wird die Rolle solcher Sportgroereignisse in den internationalen Beziehungen beleuchtet. Hierzu wird zunchst ein konstruktivistisches Modell der internationalen Beziehungen vorgestellt und weiterentwickelt, um es empirisch auf globale Sportevents anwenden zu knnen.
