Crouch spricht dabei von einer paradoxen Situation', in der sich die Demokratie seiner Meinung nach gegenwrtig befindet (er bezieht sich in seinen Ausfhrungen etwas unscharf auf die gewachsenen Demokratien Westeuropas, Japans, der Vereinigten Staaten und anderer Teile der industrialisierten Welt'): Einerseits gebe es heute mehr Demokratien als je zuvor sofern man zur Festlegung dieses Begriffes den Indikator lediglich auf (halbwegs) freie und faire Wahlen beschrnke, so Crouch. Aber es wolle kein groer Optimismus mehr aufkommen', erlutert er dennoch ernchtert, je differenziertere Indikatoren man fr die Begriffsdefinition von Demokratie heranziehe. Die politischen Partizipationsmglichkeiten der Brger in modernen Demokratien werden durch verschiedene Faktoren beeinflusst(bspw. Lobbys, Spin Doktoren), und die gilt es laut Crouch zu analysieren. Demokratie ist nicht gleich Demokratie es handelt sich hier um keinen statischen, sondern beraus dynamischen Begriff. Eine geeignete, zeitgeme Definition muss daher gefunden werden. Ziel dieser hier vorliegenden Arbeit ist die Beantwortung der Fragen: Wie ist Demokratie gegenwrtig begrifflich am geeignetsten zu fassen und durch welche Art von Politik ist sie heute geprgt?
