Aber auch Soziologinnen, Kulturwissenschaftler und Stadtgeografinnen fhlen sich von dem Phnomen ffentlicher Raum und seinen schillernden Erscheinungsformen angezogen. Dies ist seit den 1990er Jahren weltweit der Fall. Hand in Hand mit der Ausbreitung eines neuen Typus der Stadtentwicklungspolitik, der aus vielfltigen Grnden ffentliche Pltze, Straen, Uferpromenaden und stdtische Grnflchen als besonders ergiebige Raumtypen fr die Aufwertung oder Stabilisierung eines Viertels oder gar der ganzen Stadt sieht, erwuchs eine lebhafte Beschftigung mit dem Thema an Universitten, in Architektenkammern und in Feu letons. Die Freude, auf Kolleginnen und Kollegen zu treffen, mit denen man den Gegenstand gemein hat, ist allerdings oft von kurzer Dauer. Je nach fachlichem Hintergrund begreifen wir sehr unterschiedliche Rume als ffentlichen Raum. Besonders kompliziert kann es werden, wenn die Kommunikation in einer anderen Sprache als Deutsch stattfindet, denn oft stellt es sich heraus, dass die Gesprchspartner ohne Hemmung die ffentlichkeit Habermas etwa mit Hotelhallen und Bahnhofsvorpltzen vermengen. Allerdings ist es nicht nur eine Folge falscher bersetzungen, wenn die Diskussion ber den ffentlichen Raum zuweilen an den Turmbau zu Babel erinnert.
