So wird die Wissenschaft vom Gehirn nicht zum ersten Mal in der Geschichte zur Wissenschaft vom Menschen. Sie erhebt einen ganzheitlichen Erklrungsanspruch an die menschliche Existenz durch die Verortung geistiger Fhigkeiten im Gehirn. Dieses Faszinosum, aufgehangen an der Frage: Ist das Ich materialisierbar', zieht sich durch die Geschichte der Hirnforschung von ihren Anfngen bis zum heutigen Tag. Ausnahmeerscheinungen in dieser Geschichte sind Ccile und Oskar Vogt, welche ihre Hirnforschung ebenfalls als eine Wissenschaft vom Menschen begrndeten. Die Geschichte ihres Forschungsvorhabens ist eine Geschichte groer Erfolge aber auch eine Geschichte des Scheiterns und der Widersprche. Sie waren Auenseiter in der damaligen Forschungslandschaft. Zunchst nicht nur aufgrund ihrer inhaltlichen Anstze, sondern auch aufgrund der institutionellen Rahmenbedingungen, die sie sich fr ihre Forschungsvorhaben gaben. Die Vogts verfolgten neben ihrer wissenschaftlichen Ttigkeit auch politische Ziele. Sie bekannten sich ffentlich zur Sozialdemokratie und vertraten ein Konzept, welches Wissenschaft, Staat und Gesellschaft mit dem Ziel eines sich hher entwickelnden Gehirns verbinden sollte. Damit bewegten sie sich zwischen einem damals nicht unblichen Spannungsfeld aus Sozialismus, Eugenik und Biologismus, Elitenlehre und wissenschaftlichem Allmachtsglauben. Im Spiegel ihres zytoarchitektonischen Forschungskonzepts gibt es einige Anstze, die im Widerspruch zu der ffentlich vertretenen politischen Meinung stehen und die nachfolgend diskutiert werden.
