Dazu ist es notwendig, vor dem Hauptteil zunchst einmal die Begrifflichkeit Identitt' zu klren, um eine Basis fr die Analyse zu schaffen. Im Anschluss werde ich mein Augenmerk auf die besondere Komposition des Romans, die auch auf das Geschehen wirkt, legen und im jeweiligen Kontext auf den psychoanalytischen Einfluss verweisen, weil er fr das Verstndnis des Romans von zentraler Bedeutung ist. Dabei werde ich mich weitgehend auf die Lehre C.G. Jungs beschrnken, da der Psychologe selbst sowie sein Schler J.B. Lang mit Hesse in persnlichen Kontakt standen und nachweislich in Gesprchen und durch Lektre das Werk des Autors prgten. Des Weiteren sollen Figurenlage und Schlsselsymbole, wie etwa das des stndig wiederkehrende Spiegelmotivs, untersucht werden und zudem beleuchtet werden, inwiefern die Handlungstrger als Teilidentitten Harry Hallers und letztendlich des Autors Hermann Hesse selbst angesehen werden knnen. Diesbezglich werde ich im dritten Teil die Biographie Hesses unter verschiedenen Gesichtspunkten veranschaulichen, um daraus ein Resmee zu seinem Werk zu ziehen. Bei der Breite der Literatur zu Hesse, auf die ich im Laufe meiner Recherchen stie, scheint es mir verwunderlich, dass die Thematik der Identitt in seiner Romanwelt zwar stets eine Rolle spielt, doch nie explizit die Fragestellung bestimmt. So fand ich zahlreiche brauchbare Anhaltspunkte, welche auszuformulieren und weiterzudenken Ziele dieser Arbeit darstellen werden.
