Der Begriff Waffen' kennzeichnet eine groe Anzahl unterschiedlicher Gegenstnde, die dazu dienen, einem Gegner physischen Schaden zuzufgen oder aber einen solchen Versuch abzuwehren bzw. abzuschwchen. Die Ritterrstung zhlt ist zu den letzteren zu zhlten und kennzeichnet sich somit als passive Bewaffnung bzw. als Defensivsystem und als Schutzwaffe2: [Ein Plattenharnisch ist ein] vollstndiger Schutz des Krpers durch sthlerne Platten, Rhren, Schienen und Buckel'3. Die Schutzkleidung der Ritter machte im Laufe der Geschichte eine weitreichende technische Entwicklung durch, an deren Ende der den ganzen Krper bedeckende Plattenharnisch stand. In einem ersten Teil mchte ich die allgemeinen Besonderheiten der Ritterrstung im Mittelalter darlegen, um dann anschlieend auf die wichtigsten Bestandteile der Rstung einzugehen. Dabei ist zu beachten, dass die Definitionen der einzelnen Bestandteile je nach Quelle auch variieren und teils auch andere Bezeichnungen als die genannten gebruchlich sind. Zum Schluss mchte ich noch auf das Wappen eingehen, mit dem die Bestandteile der Rstung teilweise versehen wurden. Die folgenden Ausfhrungen beziehen sich insbesondere auf die Ritterrstung im Hochmittelalter, in etwas knapperer Form werde ich aber auch auf die Entwicklungen des Sptmittelalters eingehen, da sich die Rstung in ihrer eigentlichen Gestalt in Form des Plattenharnischs erst zu dieser Zeit entwickelt hat. Des Weiteren beziehen sich meine Ausfhrungen hauptschlich auf die Ritterrstung in Westeuropa.
