Jahrhunderts in Gallien beschftigt, kommt man nicht umhin zu bemerken, dass Constantius II. in smtlichen Quellenbeschreibungen relativ schlecht, der vielgepriesene Philosophenkaiser" Julian jedoch ausgesprochen gut wegkommt. Schaut man sich die Ereignisgeschichte an, ist diese Darstellung der Quellen allerdings nicht so ohne weiteres zu verstehen. Warum beispielsweise wird Julian, obwohl der doch trotz anfnglicher Erfolge in Gallien einen Groteil der rmischen Armee in Persien in den Untergang gefhrt hat, als fhiger Feldherr dargestellt? Und warum wird im Gegensatz hierzu dem Constantius trotz seiner Siege ber Schapur II. in der gngigen Sekundrliteratur unterstellt, er habe aus Furcht vor einer eventuellen Niederlage und deren Verantwortung seine Feldherrren vorgeschickt? Entsprechen die in den Quellen fters erhobenen Vorwrfe, Constantius II. habe Julian aus unlauteren Motiven heraus zum Caesaren ernannt der Wahrheit? Und ging die Erhebung des Julian zum Augustus ein Ereignis, dass nach allen damals gngigen Definitionen nur als Usurpation angesehen werden kann in der Tat allein und ohne Einverstndnis seiner selbst von den Soldaten aus? Diese Fragen und die allgemeine Quellenlage lassen auf vielfltige Konflikte zwischen Julian und Constantius II. schlieen. Die Fragen, die in dieser Arbeit diskutiert wird, lauten: Inwieweit wirkten sich diese Konflikte nun auf die gallischrmische "GermanenPolitik" des 4. Jahrhunderts aus? Waren die Anstze im Vorgehen gegen die Germanen von Julian und Constantius II. von Grund auf verschieden oder verfolgten sie eine gleiche Linie? In welchen Punkten spielten die beiden Mchtigen ein gemeinsames Spiel
