Ranke wurde 1841 von Knig Friedrich Wilhelm IV. zum Historiographen" des Preuischen Staates ernannt und 1865 in den preuischen Adelsstand erhoben. Rankes Geschichte der rmischen Ppste ist erstmals Anfang des 19. Jahrhunderts erschienen. Seine Darstellung reicht bis ins 16. Jahrhundert zurck und gilt heute als Klassiker. Ausfhrlich betrachtet Ranke die engen Verknpfungen zwischen Politik, Kirche und weltlichen Herrschern. Sein Forschungsansatz lief in vielen Punkten der kirchlichen Lehre zuwider, weswegen das Werk von der Katholischen Kirche scharf kritisiert und 1841 auf die Liste der verbotenen Bcher gesetzt wurde.
