Dies ist die Schluzeile eines sentimentalen Lieblingsliedes, das die 50jhrige Kommerzienrtin im engeren Zirkel bestndig singt und sich dadurch Anspruch auf das Hhere erwirbt, whrend ihr in Wahrheit nur das Kommerzienrtliche, will sagen viel Geld, das Hhere bedeutet...'. Gerade die Vereinbarkeit dieser Gegenstzlichkeit ist es, die Theodor Fontane seiner Hauptfigur zumutet und womit die zentrale Thematik seiner Milieustudie festgelegt ist. Knapp zusammengefasst sagt dieser Satz alles aus, um was es in Theodor Fontanes Gesellschaftsroman Frau Jenny Treibel' (so der sptere Titel) geht. Mit einem Minimum an Handlung auskommend und in einem, sich auf Gesprche beschrnkendem Erzhlstil wird hier u. a. dem bourgeoisen Besitzbrgertum des ausgehenden 19. Jahrhunderts der Spiegel vorgehalten. Einer kurzen historische Einordnung, der soziokulturellen und gesellschaftlichen Zustnde der damaligen Zeit, folgt eine Errterung ber Fontanes Mentalitten und Einstellungen zu eben diesen Zustnden, wie sie anhand brieflicher Zeugnisse festgemacht und belegt werden knnen. Die zum Teil harschen Worte, die Fontane in seinen Briefen verwendet, woraus seine kritische Haltung deutlich zu ersehen ist, beziehen sich vielfach zwar nicht konkret auf Frau Jenny Treibel', so aber doch auf die hierin behandelte Thematik. Die deutlichen Worte schwchen sich zu humoristischen Bildern ab, ein satirischer Grundton hlt Einzug in die Schilderungen der Personen und deren Handlungen; dennoch bleibt die Kritik bestehen und ist sowohl fr den damaligen als auch fr den heutigen Leser unschwer zu erkennen.
