Zugleich lsst sich heute vieles als ,romantisch' bezeichnen, vom Kerzenschein ber politische Gruppierungen bis zum Blmchenkleid. Doch ist dieser in seinem Facettenreichtum schwierige Begriff auch zu verwenden angesichts einer Dichterbiographie, die erst im Fin de Sicle des 19. Jahrhunderts beginnt und noch ber die erste Hlfte des 20. Jahrhunderts hinausreicht, eines Werkes, das dem Geiste der die positive Romantik vorwiegend negierenden Dekadenz entspringt und zum grten Teil im politischen 20. Jh. entstand? Ziel dieser Arbeit ist es, die tiefe romantische Prgung darzustellen, die dem Werk Thomas Manns wesentlich ist. Es soll herausgearbeitet werden, wie entschieden dieses Werk die romantische Tradition des 19. Jhs. aufnimmt und bewahrt, lange nachdem dieses ausgeklungen ist; wie es schlielich weit ins 20. Jh. wirkt, indem die romantische Dekadenz zugunsten des "Zuges ins Weltweite" berwunden wird. Dabei stehen die subtilen Wechselwirkungen von Regression und berwindung, die von der Romantizitt des Schaffens TMs ausgehen, im Vordergrund. Wie Goethe ist TM nicht einer Epoche, einem Zeitstil allein zuzuordnen, weder historischbiographisch, noch geistigknstlerisch. So umfasst sein Werk auch jene ,Goethe'sche Ganzheit', die (vermeintlich) Gegenstzliches in sich vereint. Dieser Eigenschaft des "Nichtmodischseins" entspricht TMs knstlerische Gre, die sich dem 19. Jh. verpflichtet und verwandt fhlt, jenem romantischen Jh., "mit dem sich in mir (TM) ein ausgesprochener Sinn fr Gre verband." Die Kunst bedeutet ihm "Aufforderung zu hchster Wachheit und Lockung zu sem Zauberschlaf zugleich", zur "gttlichdmonischen Ganzheit der Welt, des Lebens, des Menschen, der Kultur."
