Die vorliegende Arbeit soll einen Beitrag leisten zu einer Sprach und Kommu nikationsgeschichte als Bewutseinsgeschichte fr die Zeit nach 1945. Sie will aber nicht isolierte Sprachzeichen betrachten, sondern aus dem Sprachmaterial der Quellen Rckschlsse auf die Mentalitt und das ffentliche Bewutsein der betrachteten Zeitspanne bezglich des ausgewhlten Themen bzw. Politikbe reichs ziehen. Insofern ist ihr Ziel, mit sprachgeschichtlichen Mitteln, in der Beleuchtung des politischen Wortschatzes, von Bedeutungsvernderungen, Be zeichnungskonkurrenzen u. a., auch ein vertieftes Verstndnis der Zeitgeschichte zu ermglichen. Dies geschieht vor allem durch die Bercksichtigung von Argu mentationen, Sprachgebrauch und Bewutseinslagen konkurrierender Gruppen, von denen nur die jeweils durchgesetzte Sichtweise dem heutigen Betrachter i. d. R. noch prsent ist, whrend das Wissen um konkurrierende Realittsdeu tungen verschttet ist. Untersucht werden sollen in dieser Arbeit die ffentlich relevanten, das Be wutsein zumindest des politisch interessierten Teils der ffentlichkeit (mit) bestimmenden Diskussionen in dem mit Militr, Rstungs, Sicherheits oder Verteidigungspolitik bezeichneten Politikbereich. Aus dieser Vorentscheidung zur Betrachtung ffentlich relevanter Diskussionen ergibt sich die Einschrnkung auf die Betrachtung von drei groen Debatten in der Geschichte der BRD, die nicht nur im Parlament kontrovers diskutiert wurden, sondern auch vielfltige auerparlamentarische Aktivitten auslsten, die zeigen, da diese Themen die ffentlichkeit bewegt und offenbar das ffentliche Bewutsein mitbestimmt ha ben. Es sind dies die Wiederbewaffnungsdiskussion bis 1955, die Atombewaff nungsdiskussion 19571959 und die Nachrstungsdiskussion 19791983.
