Palaontologie und Chemie beriihren sich in zahlreichen Punkten. Manches steht scheinbar beziehungslos nebenein ander. Ich habe versucht, jene Erkenntnisse auszuwahlen, die in einem sinnvollen Zusammenhang stehen. Die Biochemie der vorzeitlichen Lebewesen und deren biochemische Evolu tion steht im Mittelpunkt. Beachtung verdient aber auch die SedimentChemie, soweit sie etwas iiber Lebensraum und Le bensmilieu der vorzeitlichen Organismen und deren Bezie hungen zur Umwelt aussagt. Mit der biologischen Evolution eng verbunden, ist die Chemie der irdischen Stoffkreislaufe, in die aIle Lebewesen eingebunden sind und in die sie standig hineinwirken. Ein anderes Gebiet ist die Chemie der Fossilisation, d. h. der Umwandlungsprozesse der biologischen Substanzen im Sediment. Dieses Forschungsgebiet ist zur Domane einer Nachbarwissenschaft, der organischen Geochemie geworden. Auch die Forschungsrichtung, die der Vorgeschichte des Le bens im Labor nachspiirt, hat sich zur Eigenstandigkeit neben der Palaontologie entwickelt. Uber diese ist schon oft in ver standlicher Weise geschrieben worden, so daB ich mich dazu kurz fassen kann [13, 20, 21, 39, 51, 143, 145]. In der Geschichte des Lebens gibt es einige besonders spannende Kapitel: Die Herkunft des Lebens, der Ursprung der hoheren Pflanzen und Tiere, die Entfaltung und Ausbreitung der Lebewelt auf der Erde und die groBen AussterbeEreignisse."
