Jahrhunderts, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Zwischen dem 18. und dem 19. Jahrhundert hat die literarische Gattung des Romans eine besondere Entwicklung und Aufwertung erfahren. Bis ins 18. Jahrhundert besa der Roman einen geringen Stellenwert gegenber der Lyrik und dem Drama, in denen Individualprobleme dominierten. Mit dem Zeitalter der Industrialisierung und Technisierung verlagerten sich jedoch Handlungsrahmen und Problemlagen von individuellen zu kollektiven Fragestellungen. Das Drama, das vorwiegend individuelle Schicksale behandelt und dessen Gesellschaftsbegriff sich ausschlielich an adliger und brgerlicher Gesellschaft orientiert, hat es angesichts dieser Umstnde schwer, den sozialen Fragen der Zeit gerecht zu werden. Fr eine adquate Darstellung des wirklichen und gesellschaftlichen' Lebens erhlt der Roman als eine vorzugsweise dazu ausgebildete Kunstform der Prosa' seine neue Berechtigung1. Der Roman versteht sich somit als Verschmelzung sowohl lyrischer als auch tragischer Elemente. Whrend das Tragische allerdings in der Tragdie von hohem pathetischem Stil' geprgt war2, prsentiert es sich im Roman des Realismus als Vermischung von Alltglichem und tragischem Ernst3, wobei es wesentlich an Bedeutung verliert. Im Unterschied zur franzsischen Literatur, die bedingt durch die politischsoziale Vorluferrolle' Frankreichs sich schon frh den Problemen der Zeit gestellt hat4, gewinnt der deutsche Roman als Gesellschaftsroman sehr spt den Anschlu an die Entwicklung der europischen Literatur. Die Franzsische Revolution hat eben auch im Bereich der Literatur die Dimension des Gesellschaftlichen' entdeckt und zur zentralen Fragestellung erhoben.
