Einleitung Im Sommersemester 2008 haben wir im Rahmen des Seminars Tourismus und regionale Sportkulturen in Europa' verschiedene eigenstndige Sportarten und Ausdifferenzierungen von bekannten Sportarten kennengelernt, die in einem engen Bezug zu der Region stehen, in der sie praktiziert und als Kultur gepflegt werden. Der Begriff Kultur bezeichnet in Wissenschaft und Alltagssprache sehr unterschiedliche Phnomene und ist stets in Zusammenhang mit Zivilisation zu errtern. Tylor beschrieb Kultur bereits 1870 als das komplette Ganze, das Wissen, berzeugungen, Kunst, Gesetzte, Moral, Tradition und jede andere Fertigkeit und Gewohnheit einschliet, die Menschen einer Gesellschaft erwerben' (Nnning, 2005: 106f). In einer weit gefassten Definition kann unter Kultur somit alles verstanden werden, was vom Menschen gemacht ist (Nnning, 2005: 107f). Unter den einschrnkenden Begriff Sportkultur' fallen also alle kulturellen Phnomene und Praktiken, die mit Bewegung, Spiel und Sport zu tun haben. Wir haben uns in diesem Zusammenhang mit der Tourist Trophy auf der Isle of Man beschftigt, einem in dieser Form einzigartigen Motorradrennen mit langer Tradition. In der vorliegenden Hausarbeit mchten wir die Besonderheiten der Tourist Trophy darstellen. Dazu befassen wir uns zunchst mit der Insel Man und ihren Besonderheiten, um danach besonders die Geschichte der Tourist Trophy darzustellen. Im zweiten Teil befassen wir uns mit der Mythologie, die sich um das gefhrlichste Rennen der Welt' (Limmert, 1985: 158) entwickelt hat.
