Die Meinungen ber einen EUBeitritt der Trkei gehen offensichtlich weit auseinander. Kaum ein anderes Thema wird im Zusammenhang mit der Europischen Integrationspolitik so kontrovers diskutiert wie die Frage, ob die Trkei in die Europische Union (EU) aufgenommen werden sollte. Innerhalb der Gruppe der EUBeitrittskandidaten nimmt die Trkei eine Sonderrolle ein. Kein anderes Land hat sich dermaen ausdauernd um eine EUMitgliedschaft bemht. Kein anderes Land ist dabei so oft enttuscht worden. Ein Wendepunkt der Beziehung zwischen der Trkei und der EU stellt der Gipfel von Helsinki 1999 dar, auf dem der Trkei offiziell der Status eines Beitrittskandidaten verliehen wurde. Durch die Erffnung einer Beitrittsperspektive machte sich in der Trkei eine EUEuphorie breit, die sie ihre vormalige Blockadehaltung aufgeben lie. Unter dem innenpolitisch in Bedrngnis geratenen Prsidenten Ecevit wurden Reformen durchgesetzt, die die Trkei der EU ein gutes Stck nherbrachten. Nach demWahlsieg der islamisch geprgten Partei frWohlstand und Gerechtigkeit (AKP) im Jahr 2002 wurde der Reformkurs intensiviert, was dazu fhrte, dass die EU im Jahr 2005 offiziell Beitrittsverhandlungen mit der Trkei aufnahm.
