Seine bersetzung der niederlndischen Haimonskinder wurde etwas freundlicher aufgenommen. Zwar hatte Jheronimus Rodler im Jahre 1535 einen deutschen Prosaroman nach einer franzsischen Vorlage herausgegeben; wegen ihrer Kostspieligkeit und ihres weitschweifigen Stils aber erfuhr diese Prachtausgabe keine besondere Verbreitung. Von der Aelsts Druck von 1604 geht zunchst auf eine niederlndische Prosafassung von den Heemskinderen zurck, die einem Druck von 1508 nahesteht. Der bertragung dieses Textes fgte von der Aelst die Legende des heiligen Reinold hinzu, die er aus der niederdeutschen Historie van sent Reinolt bernahm. Diese Verbindung der Heiligenlegende mit der Geschichte des fast gleichnamigen karolingischen Helden erlebte 1618 eine zweite Auflage, dann vier weitere, die letzte noch im 18. Jahrhundert. Es ist von der Aelsts Verdienst, auf diese Weise die Haimonskinder in die deutsche Literatur eingefhrt zu haben. (Edward G. Fichtner).
