Diese scheinbar einfache Frage wird wahrscheinlich nie eindeutig zu klren sein. Der Name Vinland steht dabei in einem greren Zusammenhang nicht nur fr eine nordische Siedlung, sondern fr die Entdeckung Amerikas durch die Wikinger bereits um das Jahr 1000 herum. In einer ber 300 Jahren andauernden Diskussion wurden die verschiedensten Orte entlang der Nordkste Amerikas vermeintlich als Vinland der Sagas identifiziert. Dabei ist zu bedenken, dass die gesamte Quellenlage recht drftig ist. Abgesehen von einzelnen Verweisen in unterschiedlichen Quellen beruhen die wesentlichen Erkenntnisse auf zwei islndischen Sagas, der Eirks saga raua (ES) und der Grnlendinga saga (GS), die zusammen auch als Vinland Sagas bezeichnet werden. ber die genaue Entstehungszeit ist wenig bekannt, aber es gilt als sicher, dass die Sagas erst 150300 Jahre nach den Ereignissen niedergeschrieben worden sind. Inwieweit die beiden Sagas also als verlssliche Quellen gesehen werden knnen, muss daher erst noch nher errtert werden. Neben diesen schriftlichen Quellen fehlte allerdings lange Zeit ein eindeutiger Beleg fr die frhe Entdeckung Amerikas durch die Wikinger. Das nderte sich 1961 mit der Auffindung einer Wikingersiedlung in Nordamerika durch den norwegischen Archologen Helge Ingstad. Im Zeitraum von 19611968 wurden unter der Leitung von Helge und Anne Stine Ingstad mehrere Ausgrabungen bei L'Anse aux Meadows an der uersten Nordspitze Neufundlands durchgefhrt. Diese Ausgrabungen brachten letztlich unwiderruflich den archologischen Beweis fr die Entdeckung und versuchte Besiedlung Nordamerikas durch die Wikinger. Die
