Ausgehend von dieser Frage werden die in recht spten und disparaten Listen namentlich berlieferten frhen Mainzer Bischfe einer genauen Untersuchung unterzogen, indem die greifbaren literarischen und archologischen Quellen detailliert vorgestellt und ausgewertet werden. Wenn versucht wird, den einzelnen vor Bonifatius berlieferten 15 Bischofsnamen von dem fragwrdigen Mar(t)inus ber Aureus bis Gewiliobus (8. Jh.) ein historisch vertretbares Profil zu verleihen, gilt es vor allem bei den Bischfen der Rmerzeit, zuverlssige Informationen von legendenhaften Erweiterungen zu scheiden, wie sie mit Sicherheit etwa bei der Aureus oder der TheonestTradition eingeflossen sind.
