Hoffmanns Erzhlung zu untersuchen. In den Themenkomplexen 24 werden zunchst die Textpassagen erlutert, in denen der Protagonist halluziniert: die AlchemieSzene, die Sequenz der Verfassung der Dichtung, die Handels, die Olimpia sowie die Laborepisode und die Turmszene. Die Kapitel sind unterteilt in die Geschehnisse seiner Kindheit, der Studentenzeit und in die Phase der Ausbrche des Wahnsinns. Im Verlauf der Erzhlung werden Nathanaels Wahnzustnde immer dramatischer. Die Halluzinationen fhren zu einem Verlust von Identitt und enden schlielich mit dem Tod. Liest man den Sandmann, der komplex ist wie wenige Erzhlungen der deutschsprachigen Literatur des 19. Jahrhunderts" und dessen Gewebe noch nie zufriedenstellend entwirrt" worden ist, so sieht man sich mit verschiedenen Motiven konfrontiert wie etwa dem des Automaten oder dem des Feuers. Am aufflligsten verwendet Hoffmann jedoch Motive aus dem optischen Sinnbereich etwa Augen oder Brillen und zwar so hufig, dass die gesamte Erzhlung optisch codiert" erscheint. Das Leitmotiv der Augen, welches sptestens seit den Arbeiten der Literaturwissenschaftler Peter von Matt und Yvonne Holbeche nachgewiesen ist, tritt jedoch nicht zufllig auf. Es scheint den Wahnvorstellungen des Protagonisten vorauszugehen. Deshalb soll gezeigt werden, dass jenes Motiv der Augen mit dem des Wahnsinns verknpft ist. Der fnfte Themenkomplex widmet sich Deutungen fr den Irsinn Nathanaels. Wahrlich knnen nicht alle Interpretationsanstze behandelt werden. Dazu existieren einfach zu viele, zumal sich an der Exegese des Sandmanns schon seit seiner Entstehung nicht lediglich Literaturwissenschaftler versuche
