Auch in der wissenschaftlichen Auseinandersetzung mit diesem Phnomen lassen sich unterschiedliche, zum Teil gegenstzliche Theorien finden, die entweder von einem verstrkenden Einfluss der Computerspiele auf die Gewaltbereitschaft ausgehen, oder die umgekehrt die Computerspiele als Mittel ansehen, die Gewaltbereitschaft zu senken. Zwei dieser gegenstzliche Theorien zur Wirkung violenter Medien mchte ich im Folgenden gegenberstellen: Als erstes werde ich mich mit der Katharsistheorie beschftigen, bei der davon ausgegangen wird, dass Aggression ein evolutionr bedingter Trieb ist, der sich im Krper des Menschen anstaut und nur durch Auslebung, auch am Ersatzobjekt, gesenkt werden kann. Dem gegenberstellen werde ich das General Aggression Modell von Anderson, Bushman und Carnagey, bei dem Gewalt als gelerntes Verhalten aufgefasst wird, dass sich durch bung verfestigt.
