Wie kommt es, dass ein bedeutender osterreichischer wissenschaftlicher Preis, den die Akademie der Wissenschaften von 1865 bis 1937 vergeben hat, ganzlich in Vergessenheit geraten konnte? Die geistigen und kulturellen Verwustungen, die Antisemitismus und Nazidiktatur in Osterreich anrichteten, scheinen bis heute fortzuwirken. Es gilt, die zum Teil unbekannten Preistrager des Ignaz L.LiebenPreises fur Physik, Chemie und Physiologie und des Richard LiebenPreises fur Mathematik dem Vergessenwerden zu entreissen und die Besonderheit der 'wissenschaftlichen Welt von gestern' erkennbar zu machen. Ein grosse Rolle spielten die grossen Forscherfamilien (Exner, Meyer, Przibram, Natterer) mit ihren vielfaltigsten verwandtschaftlichen und freundschaftlichen Beziehungen. Bemerkenswert viele Preistrager hatten Kontakt mit Sigmund Freud. Einige Forscherschicksale beschaftigten den unbestechlichen Chronisten Karl Kraus, andere finden sich in den Tagebuchern Arthur Schnitzlers. Wenn 2004, dem Jahr der EUErweiterung, tatsachlich in Europa eine neue Ara anbrechen soll, so ist an die Leistungen bedeutender Forscher dieses Kulturraumes zu erinnern und insbesondere die Ehre jener Wissenschaftler, die 1938 emigrieren mussten oder gar in Konzentrationslagern vernichtet wurden, wieder herzustellen. Viele deutschsprachige Altosterreicher, die damals in Prag oder Brunn tatig waren, sind bislang sowohl von der osterreichischen wie auch von der tschechischen Wissenschaftsgeschichte vergessen worden. Nicht verschwiegen werden darf, dass es unter den Laureaten auch etliche begeisterte Nationalsozialisten gab.
