Eben diese mittige Lage in der italienischen Halbinsel lie ihn eine zentrale Rolle in mehrfacher Hinsicht einnehmen: ganz banal geographisch aufgrund seiner zentralen Lage, aber ebenso politisch und symbolisch. Durch diese multiple Rolle nahm der Kirchenstaat eine dementsprechend wichtige Position bezglich der Revolutionswellen der 1830er und 1840erJahre in Italien ein. Die Entwicklungen im pontifikalen Herrschaftsgebiet und die Entscheidungen seines Staatsoberhauptes, des Papstes, hatten entscheidenden Einfluss auf die Geschehnisse dieser Phase des Risorgimento und im weitesten Sinne auch auf die letztendliche Einigung Italiens zwei Jahrzehnte spter. Die Arbeit wird sich vornehmlich auf die Untersuchung der zentralen Rolle des Kirchenstaates in den 40er Jahren des 19. Jahrhunderts konzentrieren: Zunchst wird hierfr die vorangehende Entwicklung des Kirchenstaates zu einem Brennpunkt der Revolution im Allgemeinen erarbeitet, ebenso wie das papstorientierte Einigungsmodell Vincenzo Giobertis kurz vorgestellt wird. Im Folgenden soll der konkrete Part des Papstes vornehmlich Pio IX., aber auch seiner Vorgnger dargelegt werden: Inwiefern spielten die Handlungen des Pontifex eine Rolle fr die politischen Ereignisse? Zuletzt soll dann noch die kurzlebige Rmische Republik von 1849 genauer beleuchtet werden als der Versuch, die unorganisierten politischen Bestrebungen der Revolution in ein offizielles staatliches Konstrukt zu kanalisieren.
