Diese Bezeichnung verdient er dank seinem Eneasroman' (um 1190 fertig gestellt), da er der erste Dichter ist, der das antike Epos dem hfischen Publikum in deutscher Sprache prsentiert. Veldekes Eneasroman' ist keine wrtliche bersetzung von Vergils Aeneis', sondern eine bearbeitete Wiedergabe des altfranzsischen Roman d'Eneas' (um 1160 entstanden), der seinerseits auf Vergil zurckweist. Obwohl die Fabel und die wesentlichen Etappen der rmischen Eposhandlung in die mittelalterliche Romane bernommen worden sind, unterscheiden sie sich vom antiken Werk sowohl in stilistischer, als auch in inhaltlicher Sicht. Die Akzente werden verschoben und die Charaktere umgestaltet. Die Macht der Gtter, die das Leben der Protagonisten in Vergils Aeneis' lenken, wird abgeschwcht, die Unterweltfahrt des Trojaners wird gekrzt und stark verndert, die Liebesgeschichte zwischen Lavinia und Eneas wird ins Werk eingefhrt. Alle drei Autoren folgen dem Geist ihrer Zeit und wollen mit ihren Werken das Publikum sowohl erfreuen, als auch erziehen. Im Unterschied zu der antiken Vorlage, wird in den mittelalterlichen Adaptionen mehr Akzent auf die Minnehandlungen gelegt. Die Macht der Minne wird am Beispiel der Dido und LaviniaGeschichte gezeigt, indem ihre Wirkung auf das Denken, Handeln und insgesamt auf das Leben der Personen explizit betont wird.
