El presente trabajo es el fruto de una serie de investigaciones iniciadas por la Dra. Marta Garaulet Aza sobre las bases moleculares de la obesidad. La Dra. Marta Garaulet, catedrtica del Departamento de Fisiologa de la Universidad de Murcia puso de manifiesto la relacin entre la hormona dehidroepiandrosteronasulfato (DHEAS) y la distribucin del tejido adiposo en el ser humano. Por tanto, este trabajo surge de la necesidad de explorar los mecanismos moleculares por los cuales dicha hormona es capaz de regular la distribucin del tejido adiposo. En este libro, los autores pretendemos dar luz a la relevancia de la hormona DHEAS y otros factores en la composicin y en el grado de expresin de diversos genes del tejido adiposo, aspectos fundamentales de la fisiologa de dicho tejido. Todo ello con el fin de intentar explicar, al menos en parte, algunos factores relacionados con la enorme prevalencia de sujetos con un exceso de acumulacin de grasa corporal, es decir, sujetos con obesidad, que tal y como define la OMS, es la epidemia del siglo XXI.
