Wenngleich sich eine breite Theorienvielfalt herausgebildet hat, herrscht unter den verschiedenen Vertretern doch weitgehender Konsens darber, dass die gesellschaftliche Entwicklung durch eine fortschreitende Differenzierung gekennzeichnet ist. Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts fhrte diesbezglich der deutsche Soziologe Georg Simmel den Begriff der sozialen Differenziertheit in die Soziologie ein. Unter Differenzierung wird ganz Allgemein die Aufteilung eines Ganzen in Einzelelemente verstanden, im soziologischen Sinne wird hiermit die Aufgliederung des gesellschaftlichen Ganzen in (z.B.) soziale Positionen, Lebenslagen, Systeme oder Milieus ausgedrckt. Unter Differenzierung der Gesellschaft ist also eine fortschreitende Gliederung in verschiedene Teilbereiche gemeint, die sich immer mehr verselbstndigen. Im Gegensatz hierzu besteht in der soziologischen Theorie in Bezug auf die Art und die Dimension der Differenzierung als auch allgemein auf die Benennung der gesellschaftlichen Teilbereiche ein hohes Ma an Unstimmigkeit, die Anzahl der Konzeptionen ist vielseitig. Die vorliegende Hausarbeit setzt sich mit zwei ausgewhlten Konzepten zur gesellschaftlichen Differenzierung auseinander: Zum einen mit dem Ansatz der Wertsphren' von Max Weber und zum anderen mit den Funktionssystemen' Niklas Luhmanns.
